I am writing out of my great concern regarding the negative consequences of the ongoing COVID responses, and mostly concern over the great pressure being applied to our children to take an experimental drug. These actions are not only dangerous and harmful to our children, but also create great liability for those participating in them, and stand in direct contradiction to common-sense, science, American values, and my personal religious beliefs.
The premises for a declared emergency and Emergency Use Authorization for COVID Treatments/Vaccines were threefold:
1) COVID/SARS-CoV-2 was believed to be such a novel virus that people’s immune systems would be unable to respond and protect them.
2) Asymptomatic carriers of the SARS-CoV-2 virus could still infect other people.
3) No effective treatments exist for severe COVID/SARS-CoV-2 infections.
Out of an abundance of caution and motivated by goodwill towards our fellow man, we went along with lockdowns, masking, social isolation, and all of the other practices believed necessary to slow the spread of this fearsome disease and protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
Science has now shown these premises to be false.
1) A recent study published in Cell concluded that people who had previously been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus demonstrated robust immune responses to a second infection. They also made the surprising discovery that people who had never been infected by SARS-CoV-2 also had robust immune responses to the virus, demonstrating that exposure to other coronaviruses (i.e. the common cold) also provides protection to COVID/SARS-CoV-2. These findings align with the fact that millions of people have now survived COVID/SARS-CoV-2, many without symptoms or awareness of that they had been infected. It is undeniable evidence of the strength and adaptability of our amazing immune systems.
2) Multiple studies all conclude that asymptomatic transmission of COVID/SARS-CoV-2 is rare or non-existent. Also that the CDC has found that vaccination only minimizes symptoms, it does not prevent or alter transmission. i.e. vaccinations will not stop the virus
3) Multiple treatments for COVID/SARS-CoV-2 have been discovered, verified in peer-reviewed journals and endorsed by various governing health organizations (including the CDC and FDA).
4) Research and Health Agencies have consistently agreed that healthy children and young adults have almost no risk of severe complications from COVID/SARS-CoV-2 infections, and are also much less likely to contract it in the first place.
The good news from all of this is that we will and likely have already achieved herd immunity to COVID/SARS-CoV-2 even without a vaccine. There is no urgent need to treat or require these experimental treatments, especially for children.
There are also good and valid reasons to decline the use of COVID Treatments/Vaccines.
5) As with any medical procedure, these COVID Treatments/Vaccines have the potential for adverse reactions. These include fever, hives, nausea, seizures, myocarditis, pericarditis, strokes, paralysis, and death. As of this writing (August 2021), over 500k adverse reactions, 120k hospitalizations, and 12k deaths have been reported in the USA and Territories to VAERS.gov due to COVID Treatments/Vaccines. While I am very glad to report that the majority of friends and colleagues who have taken these treatments have had no severe reactions, this is a private decision each individual and family should make for themselves.
There are also good reasons for businesses and individuals to decline to mandate COVID Treatments/Vaccines. While many states and businesses are declaring COVID Treatment/Vaccine requirements and passports, it is worth noting that just as with the previous mandates, the fine print always list multiple exemptions that all parties abide by. And although vaccine manufacturers and governments have exempted themselves from liability for any injuries incurred, businesses and individuals lack such protection.
The Faith of my Quaker Friends heritage holds that each individual carries an “Inner Light” that can guide and protect them. This is not so far from a belief in an “Immune System”, which as noted above, is confirmed by multiple scientific publications. This faith in the inner strength of myself and those around me is the basis for my family’s exemption from coerced medical procedures.
6) More good news exists for those rare cases of adverse COVID Treatment/Vaccine reactions: many dedicated and intelligent health care professionals are investigating and developing successful Treatment treatments and protocols.
7) Our children have just passed through an event that is even more bewildering to them than it is to us. Most of them lack the experience and maturity to navigate it without trauma. Losing a year of one’s life at that age to house arrest and fear is no easy thing. Depression and suicide among young adults has increased significantly in the last year. Fellow parents have observed children exaggerating or lying about their vaccination status; the pressure on them over these treatments is enormous. Some school systems have enacted vaccination segregation; with badges, masks, and no in-person education for the unvaccinated. Science (see citations) and common decency tells us these measures are unnecessary, harmful, and cruel. The immune systems of our youths are fully capable of handling a wide variety of challenges. As the delta variant has shown, there will always be new challenges. Please respect our health choices, as I too respect your health.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: The masking and protocols are not so foreign to me. I spent two years at a Korean boarding school in Seoul in the 1980’s, where respirators and masks were commonly used (but not required) through the Winters as needed. Masks for the ill, but more often respirators for the poor air quality. With the ongoing fires, I am glad to not feel like such an oddball anymore, driving alone in my truck, wearing a respirator.
As someone with a brother born deaf, deaf friends, who has worked as a transliterator, I am also well-aware of how important viewing the face is to clear communication. Such impediments to communication will retard anyone’s verbal, linguistic, and social development. This emergency period has been particularly isolating for society’s most vulnerable and isolated populations, and I am glad to see some return to normalcy.
As a mathematician specializing in biology I have helped design PCR tests (which at most had 26 cycles), and was part of the team that first identified, isolated and tracked novel swine flu for the CDC in 2010. We had a level 3 containment facility in the building, where novel pathogens and known biological weapons were studied. There was a two hour max visit time while operating, and it had negative pressure zones, changing rooms, and biohazard waste containers where suits, gloves, and respiratory masks were discarded. Containment of such pathogens is very difficult, global methods applied were insufficient for containment, and every person on Earth has been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 by now.
